Cats, Cats & More Cats !
A letter from the
Richmond Animal Protection Society
January 2008"Working in Harmony"
In the fall of 2005, we received an email from Big Heart Rescue, a group that rescues dogs mainly from small communities north of Vancouver. They had encountered a situation in Bella Bella where a couple of cats had been brought in for pest control.
The cats were unfixed and the population was already getting out of control. No one was caring for the cats, and the dogs in town were not well fed, so they were preying on the cats for food.
Big Heart asked if we could help by taking in the cats and finding them homes. We said we would do what we could and contacted some other groups. Katie's Place, CARES, Happy Cat Haven and Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue all agreed to take part. Klemtu recently asked for help as well and seven cats have come down and were taken in by the same shelters.
So far, one hundred and ninety-seven beautiful cats have been flown down on Pacific Coastal Airlines [ thank you ] and all have been placed in loving homes. So much can be accomplished when we work together. Thank you everyone for your help!
Klemtu Kittens
On June 1st, 2009 a caring nurse from Klemtu, BC. called a Big Heart volunteer in the Lower Mainland. She said “I’ve got a problem, in fact I’ve got 5 little problems”. Someone in the community had noticed that the mom cat of 5 – 2 week old kittens had not been seen for a couple of days and was worried about the kittens so brought them to the nurse.
The nurse was coming to Vancouver the next day and bringing down a cat that had already found a rescue group to take him in and she wondered if she could bring down the kittens at the same time. The volunteer gulped and said “well, sure, ah, well, I’ll have to see what I can do to find a spot for these kittens, let me call you back as soon as I have some news”. They say timing is everything and it turned out that when VOKRA was asked if they had a foster home available they did.
These 5 lucky little cats flew to Vancouver and then were taken to a wonderful foster home where they were welcomed with open arms. These volunteers said these 5 kittens were the most loving kittens they had ever fostered. There were 2 black males, Bear and Phantom who have already found wonderful homes and the 3 tortie girls have just gone up for adoption and we’re all sure they’ll be just as lucky as their brothers.

Cats CradleIn the past 4 years since the BHR Cat Team Coordinator immersed herself in this role over 425 cats and kittens have been either sterilized/vaccinated and returned to their owners or have been re-homed through our partner rescue organizations!
And who says that Big Heart Rescue does not do cats !!!
Please help Big Heart Rescue with a small donation that can be used to sterilize a cat. You can help us to help those who have no choice in being born into circumstances that place them in danger. A donation of any amount can be directed specifically for our Cat Care fund or for $100.00 you can sponsor an adult cat to receive complete veterinary care before adoption into a new home.
