Miss Blu

My dear Miss Blu,

We found you on your patch of dirt where you had laid down to die and immediately brought you into our care.  You were a very sick girl and covered in open sores, since we were traveling with 3 vets you got round the clock care.  We pumped you full of drugs and gave you a chance at life.  When I went in to feed you, you were so hungry but so tired you kept falling asleep while eating.  As the tears spilled from my eyes I knew at that moment you were coming home with me.

Auntie Ellie took very good care of you while we waited to get you on a flight then Uncle Bill traveled all day to bring you to me. When you arrived you had improved and for the first time I felt hope.

Over the next couple of weeks you continued to improve and I saw the light come back in your eyes.  Your tag wagged and you told off the boy dogs every chance you got, Blu-Blue Heeler-Bossy Boots that was you.  We went for short walks and you took such joy in exploring your new surroundings, I felt like we had turned the corner.

While stroking your chin one day I noticed a lump, the next day it had doubled in size, you stopped eating and drinking and started to fail. We rushed you to the vet where they started IV fluids and antibiotics, they told me you had to stay there until you improved.  The next day Auntie Gail and I went to see you and you were sicker than ever.  I called your name and you couldn’t even lift your head or wag your tail at me.

The vet said your bloodwork was very bad and there was no coming back, Auntie and I had to make the decision that we hate most, I crawled into your kennel and held you while you gently slipped away.

You were only with me a few short weeks but my heart is broken and I am angry, what didn’t I do, what did I miss, I didn’t bring you home to die I brought you home to heal.  Everyone says I did right by you but those are just words, it will take a long time for me to make peace with why you had to leave.

Until we meet again,

Mom
