Eagle!
Eagle
is awaiting transport from Bella Bella to the lower mainland where he will begin
his new life. A new life filled with love!
Big Heart Rescue has made a promise to Eagle that he will never again be abused, neglected or starved.
The following is what Eagle's Foster Mom (an RCMP officer in Bella Bella) has to say about this sweet little man.
Eagle is a 6-year old neutered mix and weighs in at about 25-30lbs. His former owner says he is part American-Eskimo/Spitz/Toy poodle, although I would argue that there is cocker spaniel in there too.
Eagle was definitely a familiar face among the dogs of Bella Bella, and was the smallest dog living among the many dogs on the island. He has definitely learned to hold his own in the dog world, and unfortunately, has also had to learn to weed out who's who on the human side.
Eagle was an emergency intake when I was approached by some youth who told me Eagle had been "given the boots pretty hard last night" by a local youth.
I
have known Eagle for quite some time and, as with many of my colleagues, we
often stopped to feed and pet him on our nightly patrols. If we weren't careful,
however, we would find ourselves with a ride-a-long as he would hop in our
vehicles and refuse to get out.
He loves car rides, but be forewarned, if you're considering adopting Eagle, he likes to ride shotgun - I cannot get this dog to sit and stay in the backseat!
He is a very affectionate dog who is eager to please. He knows how to sit and shake paws. He is curious about my cat and did chase her but I don't know if he was out to hurt her, and my cat did not stick around to find out (cats have no sense of humour). He does not actively seek the cat out but will go check her out if she's within view.
I have not witnessed any other possible concerns, but please keep in mind his past - he has been abused and has had to fend for food, so I don't know if he has any trigger points at this stage in the game. Because of this, I would be cautious about sending him to a home with children.
He has been kicked (I suspect this is why the odd tooth is missing); and has had rocks thrown at him, so he will only be adopted into a home without young children.
House-training is very preliminary - he has had no accidents upstairs but there have been puddles downstairs (note: I am currently trying to housebreak three dogs and am not quite sure of who the leaky one is)
Eagle is not an outdoors dog - I cannot stress this enough. He has served his time. It is time for him to live indoors, have his own bed (or share yours!), and be able to experience kindness and love, as opposed to flinching when a person reaches down to pet him.
Update: December
Congratulations to Jane and Eagle on finding each other to love!
