Harley !
My
name is Harley. I was left tied up with no food or water and so I barked and
barked and barked. Finally a nice lady picked me up and I was taken to a farm
with 3 other dogs. They tell me I’m emaciated and have dermatitis or allergies
on my skin – whatever that means. All I know is that now I can eat whenever I
want and they are giving me some icky tasting pills that are making the itching
and infection on my skin go away.
I sure like to play stick and go for truck rides. I am also good around those big black creatures on the farm….. I think they called them horses. I did chase that white cat once but it was cause I didn’t know I wasn’t supposed to. I came back when called and when I saw him again and told to be good, I was!!
I
have been very good around other dogs that I meet. There is one male dog here
that really doesn’t like me…. I think he’s spoiled or used to be a street dog or
something. Anyways, I just stay out of his way. I don’t want any trouble.
I also like to really look at the people and try to figure out what they are asking of me. Someone said it was because I’m inquisitive – that’s a big word! I don’t know some of the commands but I sure like trying and being told I’m good. I do know how to sit and down. I also have been good in the house and haven’t had any accidents.
If a stranger comes over, I do bark and I’m a bit cautious of them until they throw me a stick and show me that they like me.
They
tell me I’m a young adult dog, likely full German Shepherd and about 2-3 years
old and that I am tall and I’m going to be a large dog when I am at my optimal
weight…probably around 110 pounds.
I would require a home that likes to play and goes for hikes or jogs or fast walks and has a securely fenced yard. I am leggy and sure like to stretch my legs so someone who is at home with me most of the day would be perfect. Currently, I pull on the leash but I am working on that and because I’m smart, I will figure the whole leash thing out! After I get some exercise, I like to relax in the house and sleep. I haven’t been introduced to kids yet but I would probably think they are OK if they were a little older as I’m quite big and sensitive.
If you think I am a neat dog and could give me a fantastic home, please email spiritsmission@shaw.ca for an application form as I’d love to meet you!!

Update: 30 August
Well, I’ve been at the farm for a week now. This place is cool, I get fed regularly, have access to all the fresh water a dog could want, lots of doggie treats, and nice soft dog beds to sleep on. I really like this place and even if the gates were open, I don’t think I’d leave….I’m sorta a homebody and would rather hang with the humans than with the other 3 dogs. I like to lounge on the cool deck of the house or assist with farm chores. I love to follow the tractor around. If the people are on that computer thing, I like to sleep at their feet. I’m very good in the house and sleep the night through as quiet as a mouse! I do have a loud, deep bark and will bark at strangers that come onto or walk past the property. I do this just to alert my people but once introduced to the strangers, I like them.
Last night we went on a really neat walk in the bushes. They had me on a leash at first and I learned not to pull – no problem! Then, I was let off the leash and oh boy, I was so excited. I would gallop up the trail about 30 feet and then turn and make sure the people were coming too. I’m not sure why they didn’t gallop with me as it was all too exciting but I was watching to make sure they didn’t leave me alone. I sure wouldn’t want to lose them. I got to sniff and explore and then I went swimming in the lake. That was a lot of fun even though the street dog would growl at me if I swam near his stick. I like swimming even though I look like I’m going to sink. They said I need more fat and then I can swim better.
They put me back on a leash when we went
past two barking Rottweilers. I didn’t care about those dogs at all; I just
kept healing on the leash like I’d learned. The street dog was interested in
them but they say he is getting better going past strange dogs. He’s definitely
not as good as me…..the street must have been tough!! I sure like to learn new
things and try them out.
I’m starting to feel better and have gained some weight. My skin isn’t itchy and I’m growing my beautiful coat back!!! They tell me I’ll be even more handsome when I’m all fixed up. I’m a happy boy and life is good!
Love Harley!!
