Nigel and his family !
A
week before Christmas Big Heart Rescue was contacted about a 6 week old
puppy that had been used as a football, tossed between two inebriated teenage
girls who thought it would be fun to see how far he could fly before landing on
the pavement again and again and again.
The RCMP seized the puppy and sent him to Big Heart Rescue and he was immediately taken to the vet where it was discovered that he had a twisted spine, dislocated shoulder, bruising of the eye and a dent in his skull.
After a few days Nigel, as we named him, became healthy and spunky under the loving care of his foster Mom. Then he started to show signs of illness not related to his prior abuse.
On Christmas Eve he was rushed to Vancouver Emergency Clinic where it was discovered he was positive for Parvo, a deadly disease that kills approximately 80% of malnourished youngsters.
With the discovery that Parvo was present on this isolated northern island it meant making call after call to find the litter mates and parents before this infection spread to other dogs in the community. The RCMP assisted BHR in finding out that four puppies from this litter had died, one was alive but was sick and the parents were abused, neglected and starved porch dogs.
The other sick puppy was found, sent to BHR and we are awaiting the results of an x-ray that shows a heart deformity, but the good news is that this wee one is negative for Parvo.
The RCMP also found the parents of this litter and these dogs arrived into our care yesterday. The photo's demonstrate the horrifying condition of the father who produced this sick litter.

Both parents are now under veterinary supervision where the male will be shaved today under anaesthetic.
Nigel came home after 10 days in the clinic, enduring numerous blood transfusions and extreme medical intervention but he had won the battle against Parvo! Many of the staff at the clinic fell in love with this little fighter and Vancouver Emergency generously gave BHR a 10% rescue discount towards the invoice. Even with this discount BHR has been left with an enormous bill and Animal Advocates Society generously donated a large sum to reduce this financial strain on our small non-profit organization. We are only able to help these companions due to the generosity of donor's like yourself.
This family is on the road to recovery and will never know another day of abuse, starvation and neglect thanks to the support of the RCMP, Pacific Coastal Airlines, volunteers, veterinarians, foster homes and Big Heart Rescue.
Update:
January
On January 5th Nigels' Dad was shaved, neutered and had a hernia repaired. He will make a full recovery now that he is safe from the horror's of his past and will find a new and loving home with his mate who is due for her spay and exploratory surgery on a lump today.
Please note that Nigel's parents must go together to their new home as these two have counted on each other for survival and we will not separate them.
Update:

Sweet survivor Nigel has found his new loving home and is adored by his adoptive family who are lavishing him with all the love he so deserves.
Fun loving Jerry (Nigel's Dad) is feeling like a million bucks and amazes his foster Mom with the amount of energy and antics he has in a day. Jerry is doing very well with his house training and gets along well with the other dogs in the house. Jerry has told us he is ready for a family of his own who will spoil him, love him and adore him.
Gracie, Nigel's Mom has now found herself the most wonderful new family who reside on Gabriola Island. She has a sister who is teaching her how to play and the salt air is doing a world of good for her stress level.
To all of you who provided support for this family, the Big Heart Rescue team wishes to thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
